Changing What You Say Can Change How You Feel

How many times per day do you use "I have to" to describe things you need to get done?

I have to go to work.

I have to get this projectdone.

I have to take my kids topractice.

I have to go to thegrocery store.

Talking to yourself this way adds internal pressure and stress and creates an invisible burden.

Next time, use this instead “I get to” and see how it changes your attitude.

I get to go to work.

I get to do this project.

I get to take my kids topractice.

I get to go to the grocerystore.

Thewords "I get to" enable two different happiness triggers:

  1. Gratitude - something to be grateful for.

  2. Anticipation - something to look forward to.

As an ER manager on thefrontline, my team and I struggle every day to stay afloat. Most days I havemore “iron in the fire” that humanly possible to manage in an 8-hr shift, andsome days when I got home, I have just enough strength to eat and go to sleep.

These are tough times and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. And, if we're not careful, our frustration and exhaustion will end up clouding our vision.

Before it gets too overwhelming, try a simple shift in your words:

"I get to."

This will remind you of everything you’ve been blessed with.

Be kind to yourself and, if you must, take a break or step back for a short time to recharge.

And celebrate……

Having a job.

Having a family.

Having health and strength.

Because going to work, doingdifficult projects, spending your evenings driving your kids around, andrunning errands for your family, simply means you have a healthy family andmeans to provide for them.

And that's something to celebrate.

Don't get sidetracked andmiss being grateful for your blessings or take the most important things inyour life for granted.

It’s not easy but it's worthit.

Be intentional and focus.

Catch yourself when you'regoing off track.

And when you find yourselfsaying “I have to” change the words to “I get to.” Let it be a reminder ofeverything you have to be thankful for!
