What Happens When a Nurse Understands Money?

The Conversation We Owe Ourselves About What We Build Next

For over 40 years, I wore the title nurse with pride.

I started nursing school at 17 years old in Jamaica, built a career caring for others, moved to America, earned advanced degrees, became a leader, and eventually earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice.

I knew how to care for critically ill patients.
I knew how to lead teams.
I knew how to navigate emergencies.

But there was one subject I was never formally taught:

How money really works.

And I discovered something important:

Being highly educated is not the same as being financially educated.

The Financial Education Gap

Many nurses and healthcare professionals spend years learning anatomy, pharmacology, critical thinking, leadership, and patient care.

We dedicate our lives to taking care of others.

But somewhere along the way, many of us never learned how to take care of our own financial future.

We weren't taught:

• How much money we actually need to retire
• How investing works
• How to protect our income and families
• How to reduce debt strategically
• How to create options beyond a paycheck
• How to build wealth and leave a legacy

Many hardworking professionals don't have an income problem.

They have a financial education problem.

That was my story too.

My Financial Setback Became My Turning Point

In 2016, after decades of working hard, I experienced a financial setback that forced me to look honestly at where I was.

My credit score dropped to 490.

It was humbling.

I had degrees.
I had experience.
I had a successful career.

But I realized success on paper does not automatically create financial confidence.

That moment could have been the end of my story.

Instead, it became the beginning of my education.

I started learning personal finance. I rebuilt my financial foundation. I became a financial coach. Eventually, I transitioned from helping people with their physical health to helping people with their financial health.

Today, as The Money Nurse®, my mission is simple:

Helping nurses and healthcare professionals find clarity today so they can retire confidently tomorrow.

Financial Health Is Self-Care

As nurses, we talk about physical health.

We talk about mental health.

We talk about emotional health.

But we don't talk enough about financial health.

Yet money stress impacts everything:

Our sleep.
Our relationships.
Our health.
Our career choices.
Our peace of mind.

Financial wellness isn't just about numbers on a statement.

It's about creating a healthier future.

Money Creates Options

For years, I thought retirement planning was just about saving money.

Now I understand it's about something much bigger.

It's about options.

The option to retire when you're ready.

The option to work because you want to—not because you have to.

The option to spend time with family.

The option to give, serve, travel, and live with purpose.

Money doesn't buy happiness.

Money creates choices.

The Questions Every Nurse Should Ask

After working with families and professionals, I've learned that most people aren't really asking about investments.

They are asking deeper questions:

💜 Will it last?

💜 What happens if something unexpected happens?

💜 How can I help my family?

💜 How can I leave a legacy?

These questions deserve answers.

Hope is not a retirement strategy.

A plan is.
